On this weeks strategy session, I’d like to talk about building the right team for your tax business. When I started out in the tax business 12 years ago, it was only me. No assistants, no processors, no tax preparers, no operations team, no marketers. I did it all. And it was not cool. I learned the hard way that I needed to surround myself with awesome people. People who complimented my weaknesses. In some cases, people who are smarter than. Never skimp on human capital. You can only get so far by yourself.
Steve Jobs said: “My model for business is The Beatles. They were four guys who kept each other’s negative tendencies in check. They balanced each other and the total was greater than the sum of the parts. That’s how I see business: great things in business are never done by one person, they’re done by a team of people.”
Find your guys (or girls) to keep you in check and balanced. Build your team. It will make the difference from you surviving compared to thriving in business. If you are great at marketing, get good operations people on your team. If you are great at doing taxes, get someone to market for you. If you are small and starting out, that doesn’t mean that you have to be hiring full time. You can hire part-time or you can subcontract to other vendors or providers to fill your holes.
